How Parents, Schools, and Community Can Create External Assets For Teens To Succeed

It is attainable and possible for all developing and developed socioeconomic nations to build or have a strong foundation of external assets for teenagers to have a successful life.

EXTERNAL ASSETS AS A FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE SUCCESSFUL ADULTS

All teenagers experience external assets. The more external assets they have, the greater their success rate as future adults, the fewer at-risk behaviours they will have, and the more resilient they will become. These external assets are possible in almost every society with the proper political and economic willingness and understanding to create future successful citizens and prosperous society.

SUPPORT FOR TEENAGERS

If teenagers are SUPPORTED within their family with positive communication and caring adult relationships within the family and extended family, with a caring, stable neighbourhood, a caring sense of belonging school as a community hub and second home, and parents are positively involved in their teenager's schooling, this teenager will have a clear path to a successful life.

POSITIVE EMPOWERMENT OF TEENAGERS

Teenagers need to have a sense of EMPOWERMENT and feel valued in their community by their peers and adults. They also need to have resources, intellectual and physical, such as recreation centres or libraries, which create a safe sense of belonging without economic/cost barriers.

BOUNDARIES AND EXPECTATIONS FOR TEENAGERS

Teenagers require boundaries and expectations within their families, schools, and neighbourhoods. Within these expectations, they need positive role models from adults and peers and post-secondary/college expectations from all adults.

TEENAGERS NEED PROACTIVE POSITIVE CONSTRUCTIVE TIME

All teenagers need friendships, and time at home with family and friends is favourable for their psychosocial development. Teenagers also being part of a religious community builds positive, lasting relationships with other young people and adults. Teenagers need to be part of youth programs within the community, such as sports, healthy physical activity choices, clubs, the fine arts or cadets.
