"No love is greater than that of a father for His son." ~ Dan Brown

"The father who does not teach his son his duties is equally guilty with the son who neglects them." ~ Confucius

"All children need their fathers, but boys especially need fathers to teach them how to be men." ~ Dwyane Wade

A conversation with my 16-year-old boy, grade 11, on the way to his college basketball identification camp tryout.

Dad:

My young man. You know what you have to do today. What is your goal today?

Parker:

I want those coaches to see my skill sets. I want to plant seeds with those coaches about my game.

Dad:

Your hard work, over 5 years of training, 6 days a week prepares for high school and college ball. College ball would be your dream come true, my man.

Parker:

I know, it would be great.

Dad:

My young man, what are your main strategies of attaining today's goal?

Parker:

  • Ruthless Lockdown defense
  • Best handles on the court
  • Fastest player on the court
  • Best shooter on the court
  • Best playmaker on the court
  • Loudest player on the court
  • Best passer on the court
  • No turnovers
  • Control the offense
  • Talk and quick reaction on defense
  • Ask for multiple screens for pick and rolls
  • Get multiple paint touches, creating scoring opportunities for my teammates and I
  • Keep a clear mind & deep breaths
  • Don't get frustrated
  • Of course have fun
  • There's going to be mistakes. I just need to have fun and everything will fall into place

Dad:

Those are great strategies my man. Execute those strategies and you will achieve your goal today my man!

Parker:

Thanks Dad
