Reading and Learning About Dr. Morris

"First there was racism. Then liberals created institutional racism and coded racism. You can only hear it with a dog whistle." ~ Evan Sayet

"What I've always said is that I'm opposed to institutional racism, and I would've, had I've been alive at the time, I think, had the courage to march with Martin Luther King to overturn institutional racism, and I see no place in our society for institutional racism." ~ Rand Paul

"In America there is institutional racism that we all inherit and participate in, like breathing the air in this room - and we have to become sensitive to it." ~ Henry Louis Gates

"Indians in America are yet to be considered human beings, even though the Pope issued a papal bull in 1898 that declared us to be human beings. But to show you the institutional racism, the sports teams are still using the Indians as mascots." ~ Russell Means

Many people, including myself, navigate socially structured and historically institutionalized systems shaped by rules, discipline, and consequences. We strive to be efficient, professional, and ethical in our decision-making. However, in doing so, we sometimes overlook the importance of compassion, restorative alternatives, and forgiveness, qualities essential for building a better society.

As an Indigenous person, I am committed to fairness, objectivity, and impartiality in all matters. Yet, the weight of informal rules, social norms, and historical consequences often causes us to second-guess our decisions. Despite these challenges, we continue to do our best, especially for our students. Our goal is for them to surpass us, to become leaders who shape a more just and equitable society.

To deepen my understanding, I am actively studying the work of Dr. Monique W. Morris, also known as Dr. Monique W. Couvson.

Just to make sure you know, my earlier family as a child was extremely anti-racism of people of colour, and to protect 2 spirit individuals. My parents and grandparents and whole extended family protested against racism and discrimination.

Families linked to us are equally or more sensitive to contribute to anti-racism and understanding trauma informed situations.
