Logotherapy, Short-term Goals, & Long-term Goals

"Those who have a 'why' to live, can bear with almost any 'how'." ~ Friedrich Nietzsche

"When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves." ~ Viktor E. Frankl

"Logotherapy focuses on the meaning of human existence as well as on man's search for such a meaning." ~ Viktor E. Frankl

"Life is never made unbearable by circumstances, but only by lack of meaning and purpose." ~ Viktor E. Frankl

"Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather must recognize that it is he who is asked." ~ Viktor E. Frankl

You can use logotherapy as a high school or college student to set goals that are motivated by meaning rather than anxiety or external pressure. Instead of focusing solely on achieving success or avoiding failure, consider your priorities and what life might be asking of you at this moment. When your actions are in line with your values, even seemingly insignificant ones, like lending a hand to a classmate, asking for assistance, or being there for your family, gain greater meaning.

Even though you might not always be in control of your circumstances, you always have the ability to decide how you will react, and that decision can influence who you are now and how you will develop in the future.

Try to relate your long-term objectives to something bigger than yourself. Consider your journey as a means to help others, move past the past, or set an example, whether that means obtaining a degree, finding employment, or starting a family. Your struggles can serve as a guide rather than a limitation.

You can stay focused and develop resilience by giving your life's experiences purpose. You're developing a purpose rather than merely striving for success. You can find motivation to continue even when you're in pain.
