Amnesty International Has Condemned the Measure As ‘Discriminatory, Racist, and Downright Cruel’

In response to President Trump imposing a new discriminatory travel ban on visitors from Afghanistan, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, and a partial travel ban on people from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela

By endorsing Trump's travel ban, you are committing to policies that are seen as unfair, racist, and discriminatory. Those from Black, Brown, or Muslim-majority countries are disproportionately targeted by these bans because of their race, religion, or nationality.

According to international human rights law, such broad restrictions amount to racial discrimination. These policies penalize innocent people based only on their origins or beliefs, rather than ensuring security.

You are supporting harmful stereotypes and false information by defending the ban. You contribute to the misconception that, based only on their nationality, individuals from particular nations are essentially dangerous or threatening.

This narrative incites hatred and fear in the United States and around the world. By spreading false information, it distorts public opinion and policy, promoting racism and xenophobia in daily life. It also keeps families apart and makes it harder for refugees to find safety in other nations that uphold international humanitarian—refugee law.

Racism and xenophobia like these violate international human rights norms and incite other countries to follow suit. This new American authoritarian government reinforces fear and hatred rather than acting with humanity, courage, and principle that America was actually founded on, and at one time, America was a beacon of Hope in the world.
