"The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project is purely economic. There are no political undertones and no political conditions." - Vladimir Putin

Indeed, the world has heard directly from the horse's mouth! USA "Ending" and "stopping" the Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea is something that President Trump has publicly boasted about. "Nobody else ended Nordstream but me," he said. Additionally, prior to the pipelines being destroyed in February 2022, then President Joe Biden issued a warning that "If you invade Ukraine Nordstream 2 will no longer exist," claiming that the United States had ways to stop it. This was interpreted as a "very revealing" hint that the pipeline would be destroyed.
This terrorist attack, is the largest known human-caused methane leak on a natural gas pipeline that was built and funded by join ventures between Russia, Germany, and Denmark countries and companies. In the meantime, Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist Seymour Hersh revealed his own shocking revelation. Hersh claims that insiders in the US government informed him that the sabotage was being carried out by the US military. Naturally, the US government denied this, but even well-known publications like The Washington Post which some people think is CIA acknowledged that the US knew about Ukraine's possible plans. It is noteworthy because it suggests the implicit, if not outright, support of the United States.
The Nord Stream pipelines had long been opposed by Donald Trump, who even sanctioned companies involved in Nord Stream 2 during his presidency, thereby putting a stop to the project. Shortly after the sabotage/terrorist attack, Polish politician Radosław Sikorski tweeted, “Thank you USA,” an expression of gratitude that many found revealing, considering his connections to USA.
Just listening to this Geopolitical Economy Report podcast/YouTube channel, the global energy chessboard says a lot, to the sabotage would be a high level of military expertise due to the risk of such an operation. The Nord Stream pipelines, which provided cheap, dependable gas to power Europe's largest industrial economy, had represented Germany's economic partnership with Russia. From the US's point of view, this was about strategic supremacy and yearly profits in the hundreds of billions, for the sale of oil and gas.
The pipelines' destruction was a perfect fit with a larger US strategy to erode European-Russian relations. From Zbigniew Brzezinski to present officials, American policymakers have cautioned for decades against a strong European-Russian alliance, particularly between Russia's natural resources and Germany's industrial might. The United States' unipolar dominance would be challenged by a powerful German-Russian economic partnership. NATO has always believed in "keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down."
Furthermore, Biden and Trump it made clear, Europe had to purchase American liquefied natural gas (LNG) rather than Russian pipeline gas. That's exactly what happened after the terrorist sabotage: US fossil fuel companies made record profits, and the US became Europe's top supplier of both LNG and oil at a much higher cost on the global market.
Despite never being put online, Nord Stream 2 continued to pose a strategic challenge to US energy dominance. It was vehemently opposed by bipartisan U.S. administrations. It was intended to double the flow of Russian gas straight to Germany. Its devastation made it impossible for any German government in the future to bring it back as a substitute for American reliance on energy. Additionally, Trump's "Biggest Trade Deal, Ever!" locked Germany and the rest of the EU in the coffin until 2035.
