My Mother Would Say, My Love!

“Other things may change us, but we start and end with the family.” - Anthony Brandt

“Family is the compass that guides us. They are the inspiration to reach great heights, and our comfort when we occasionally falter.” - Brad Henry

“What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family.” - Mother Teresa

Love of family is one of the most grounding and nurturing experiences us indigenous families ever come to know. It isn’t just about bloodlines or names written on a family tree. It’s carried in friendship, in shared responsibility.

At its heart, indigenous family love is unconditional.

It never asks for perfection, and it does not measure us by our achievements. Instead, it reveals itself quietly, in patience, in forgiveness, in sacrifice, and in loyalty that endures.

This kind of love is protective and resilient.

Every indigenous family faces conflict, misunderstandings, and struggles, yet beneath all of that rests a bond strong enough to hold us together. It’s this hidden strength that makes healing possible, that allows reconciliation, and that gives us courage when the world outside feels uncertain or too heavy to carry alone.

On a deeper level, family love is where most of us first learn the language of empathy and care.
