I am a strong proponent of free access to computer technology for families, students, and individuals in need due to their socioeconomic status or economic situation of need.
For over 15 years, I have sought out and delivered refurbished computers with Linux operating systems for families and individuals. This is the non-profit organization that I have always gone to to support such communities in need.
Alberta Computers for Schools (ACFS)
- A non-profit collaborative model involving the Alberta Government, Federal Government, and the private sector promoting equitable access to technology.
- Computers for Schools is a nationwide initiative that takes donated digital devices from various sources and refurbishes them.
- Desktop and laptop computers are distributed to schools, libraries, non-profits, Indigenous communities, and low-income individuals.
- The program is supported by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED).
- Since 1994, ACFS has donated over 250,000 computers in Alberta.
- ACFS plays a crucial role in extending the life of computers, thereby reducing environmental impact.
- ACFS diverts approximately 450,000 pounds of material from recycling facilities annually to extend the lifespan of computers!
- ACFS's philosophy is that all students, individuals, non-profits, libraries, and Indigenous communities have equal access to learning opportunities to improve their quality of life and for future socioeconomic opportunities to succeed.
